Jonathan was the son of King Saul of Israel. Saul’s appointment as king had help to unite the tribes of Israel in some sense, but it also attracted enemies. One of those enemies was the Philistines. They lived along the Mediterranean coast and were far superior when it came to working with metal and creating weapons of war. Israel’s defense was to stay up in the hills. There were constant battles for territory taking place. In today’s story, things are not going well for the Israeli army. They are basically hiding out in fear of a much superior Philistine army. But then Jonathan decides to take a bold step.
